Martin Atkins	e23e6b84c7	lang/funcs: Allow some more expression types in templatestring The templatestring function has some special constraints on its first argument that are included to add some intentional friction for those who are new to Terraform, want to do some simple template rendering, but have only found the templatestring function so far. We know from previous experience with the hashicorp/template provider that this sort of functionality tends to attract those who haven't yet learned that the Terraform language has built-in support for string templates (without calling any function), who would then get confused by the need for an extra level of escaping to render a template string only indirectly through this function. However, this rule is not intended to be onerous and require writing the rest of the containing module in an unnatural way to work around it, so here we loosen the rule to allow some additional forms: - An index expression whose collection operand meets these rules. - A relative traversal whose source operand meets these rules. In particular this makes it possible to write an expression like: data.example.example[each.key].result ...which is a relative traversal from an index from a scope traversal, and is a very reasonable thing to write if you've retrieved multiple templates using a data resource that uses for_each. This also treats splat expressions in the same way as index expressions at the static check stage, but that's only to allow us to reach the dynamic type check that will ultimately report that a string is required, because the result of a splat expression is a tuple. The type-related error message is (subjectively) more helpful/relevant than the syntax-related one for this case. Finally, this includes some revisions to the documentation for this function to correct some editing errors from the first pass and to slightly loosen the language about what's allowed. It's still a little vague about what exactly is allowed, but I'm doubtful that a precise definition in terms of HCL's expression types would be very enlightening for a typical reader anyway. We can tweak the specificity of the language here if we start to see repeated questions about what is and is not valid.	2 years ago

Martin Atkins	58b48f4bab	provider/terraform: Use new convention for function names When we added these functions we hadn't yet settled on a single convention for how provider-contributed functions ought to be named, and so these followed the convention previously used for Terraform's own built-in functions. We've now decided to use the new provider namespace as an opportunity to partially fix the historical design error of naming functions as all lowercase without any separation between words. This makes the provider functions inconsistent with the built-in functions, but should at least hopefully encourage the provider functions to be consistent with one another, so that the rule for which to use is relatively easy to remember. This also switches the word order because the provider functions convention prefers the verb to come first: encode_tfvars instead of tfvarsencode.	2 years ago

Martin Atkins	573c2db658	provider/terraform: Terraform-specific encoding functions Using the new possibility of provider-contributed functions, this introduces three new functions which live in the terraform.io/builtin/terraform provider, rather than being language builtins, due to their Terraform-domain-specific nature. The three new functions are: - tfvarsencode: takes a mapping value and tries to transform it into Terraform CLI's "tfvars" syntax, which is a small subset of HCL that only supports key/value pairs with constant values. - tfvarsdecode: takes a string containing content that could potentially appear in a "tfvars" file and returns an object representing the raw variable values defined inside. - exprencode: takes an arbitrary Terraform value and produces a string that would yield a similar value if parsed as a Terraform expression. All three of these are very specialized, of use only in unusual situations where someone is "gluing together" different Terraform configurations etc when the usual strategies such as data sources are not suitable. There's more information on the motivations for (and limitations of) each function in the included documentation.	2 years ago

Martin Atkins	f260ed1177	website: Remove warning that yamlencode is experimental We originally included this warning because the go-cty-yaml module wasn't yet stable and it was also not extensively tested so it wasn't yet clear if its behavior would need to change in some less common cases we hadn't tested so far. However, go-cty-yaml had its v1.0.0 release some time ago and is now committed to preserving its current Marshal output unless it is found to be non-compliant with the YAML 1.2 specification. This doc change means that Terraform's yamlencode is now adopting a similar posture: - The exact style details produced by the function for a particular input are now frozen. It'll change only if we find that the function is producing output that isn't valid per the YAML spec. - If someone finds a YAML parser that cannot parse what yamlencode produces but what it produces is valid per the YAML 1.2 spec, we'll expect the parser to be corrected to better support the spec rather than changing the yamlencode output. There may be pragmatic exceptions if we encounter a situation we cannot anticipate yet, but the above will be our general rule. This is really just a specialization of the spirit of the v1.x Compatibility Promises, tailored specifically to this function.	4 years ago
